Every breeder has a story, and my began with a very special little ferret.Â
When I was a child, my grandmother brought home a ferret named Tokko. He quickly became one of the family's most beloved pets and my constant companion. Tokko had a gentle, affectionate personality and showed me just how intelligent, playful, and unique ferrets truly are. He lived an incredible nine years, and throughout his long life he left a lasting impression on me. Although I didn't realize it at the time, he was the one who sparked my lifelong love for these remarkable animals.
After Tokko passed away, my interests gradually shifted toward dogs, and I dedicated many years to learning about responsible breeding, structure, genetics, health, and animal behavior. Working with dogs taught me the importance of preserving breed quality through careful planning, thoughtful selection, and always putting the animals' welfare first. Those experiences continue to shape the way I approach breeding today.
As the years passed, I found myself missing the unique personality and endless entertainment that only a ferret can bring. I wanted an intelligent, energetic companion that could fill my home with laughter and curiosity once again. That is when I welcomed my first two female ferrets into my family. They quickly reminded me why I had fallen in love with ferrets all those years ago. Their playful nature, intelligence, and affectionate personalities reignited a passion that had been waiting patiently in the background for many years.
Today, Demartel Ferrets is the result of that journey.
My breeding program is built on the belief that quality should always come before quantity. Every breeding decision is made with careful consideration of health, temperament, longevity, and correct structure according to the standard. My goal is not simply to produce beautiful ferrets, but to preserve and improve the domestic ferret by breeding ferrets that are healthy, confident, well-balanced, and capable of living long, fulfilling lives.
I believe that exceptional breeding begins long before a kit is born. It starts with selecting the right breeding animals, studying pedigrees, understanding genetics, and continuously learning from experienced breeders and the wider ferret community. Every litter represents years of planning, research, and dedication.
Equally important is the life each kit experiences after birth. All of my kits are raised in a loving home environment where they receive daily handling, enrichment, and socialization from an early age. This helps them develop into confident, curious, and well-adjusted companions who transition smoothly into their new homes.
For me, breeding is not a hobby driven by numbers or profit. It is a long-term commitment to the future of the species I love. My greatest hope is that every ferret born at Demartel Ferrets becomes a healthy, cherished family member and brings its owners as much happiness as Tokko brought to mine many years ago.
