Adoption Process
Choosing to welcome a ferret into your home is a decision that should never be made on impulse. Ferrets are intelligent, energetic, and incredibly rewarding companions, but they also require time, dedication, financial responsibility, and a lifelong commitment.
At De Martel, every kit is raised with love and purpose. From the moment they are born, they receive daily handling, socialization, enrichment, and the best care I can provide. Because of this, finding the right home for each of my ferrets is just as important to me as planning the breeding itself.
I am not looking for the first person willing to buy a ferret—I am looking for the right person. My responsibility as a breeder does not end when a kit leaves my home. It begins long before they are born and continues throughout their lives.
For that reason, I ask every prospective owner to carefully read the information below before applying.
The Application
The first step in welcoming a De Martel ferret kit into your family is completing the MANDATORY application form.
The application is not intended to be difficult or intimidating. Instead, it helps me get to know you, understand the type of home you can provide, and ensure that one of my kits will be a good fit for your lifestyle.
The form includes questions such as nutrition, housing, enrichment, health care, common illnesses, and daily care are considered essential knowledge for anyone planning to own a ferret.
I strongly encourage every future owner to gather information from multiple reliable sources, including books, scientific articles, experienced ferret owners, reputable breeders, and veterinarians familiar with ferrets. The more knowledge you have before bringing your ferret home, the more confident and prepared you will be as an owner.
Of course, I will always be available to answer questions regarding your individual ferret and to provide advice whenever needed. However, my role is to support and guide you—not to replace the personal responsibility that comes with becoming an informed and responsible ferret owner.
Taking the time to research and prepare before applying demonstrates commitment, responsibility, and genuine interest in providing the best possible life for your future companion. These are qualities that I value highly when selecting homes for my kits.
Once your application has been submitted, I will review it carefully and contact you as soon as possible.
Application Approval
Every application is considered individually.
If I believe your home is a suitable match, we will discuss the available kits and together decide which ferret would best suit you and your family.
If your application is not approved, you will be informed that it has been declined.
Applications may be declined for many different reasons, including but not limited to:
Insufficient knowledge of basic ferret care
Unsuitable housing or living conditions
Lack of time to provide proper daily care and enrichment
Concerns regarding the long-term commitment required
Previous neglect or poor care of animals
Providing false or incomplete information
Any situation that I believe may compromise the welfare of one of my ferrets
Please understand that not every reason can or will be discussed in detail. In some cases, I may simply inform you that your application has not been successful without providing further explanation. These decisions are never personal and are always made with the welfare of my ferrets as the highest priority.
Reserving a Kit
Once your application has been approved and we have agreed on the most suitable kit for you, your reservation can be confirmed.
A €50 reservation deposit is required to secure your chosen ferret.
The deposit confirms your commitment and allows me to reserve that kit exclusively for you.
Please note that this deposit is non-refundable if you decide to cancel your reservation or change your reservation to another kit. This policy exists because every reservation affects future availability and planning for other prospective owners.
The remaining balance is due before or when your ferret leaves for its new home.
Pricing
The price of a De Martel ferret kit is €350.
This price reflects much more than simply purchasing a ferret.
Behind every litter are months—often years—of planning, studying pedigrees, selecting suitable breeding pairs, veterinary care, quality nutrition, enrichment, socialization, and countless hours dedicated to raising healthy, confident kits.
I strive to produce healthy, well-structured companions that will become cherished family members for many years to come.

Transfer Contract
Lifetime breeder support
The transfer contract protects both the new owner and the ferret. It confirms ownership, records the ferret's health status at the time of transfer, outlines the responsibilities of both parties, and clearly states that the ferret is sold as a companion and not for breeding, unless otherwise agreed.
If, at any point during the ferret's life, the owner is no longer able to care for it, I must be contacted immediately. Under no circumstances may the ferret be sold, gifted, rehomed, surrendered, or otherwise transferred to another person or organization without my prior written consent.
As the breeder, I reserve the first right of refusal and the first opportunity to take the ferret back. My priority is ensuring that every ferret bred by me remains safe and well cared for throughout its lifetime. Whenever possible, I will personally take the ferret back and either provide it with a permanent home or carefully arrange a suitable new placement.
If an owner rehomes, sells, or transfers the ferret without my written permission, they will be considered in breach of the transfer contract, and the contractual penalties outlined in the agreement may apply.
This policy is not intended to make ownership difficult—it exists because I remain responsible for every ferret I bring into the world. My commitment to their well-being does not end when they leave my home, and I believe every ferret deserves the security of knowing there will always be someone looking out for its future.
You are able to read the contract here:
Bringing Your Ferret Home
My kits leave for their new homes only when they are physically mature, emotionally confident, and ready for the transition.
For homes within Latvia, kits are ready from 10 weeks (2½ months) of age.
For international homes, kits leave from 12 weeks (3 months) of age, allowing additional time for vaccinations, travel preparation, and healthy development.
I never rush this process. The extra time spent with their mother, siblings, and people plays an important role in developing confident, social, and emotionally stable ferrets.
Breeding Policy
Unless otherwise agreed, all De Martel Ferrets are sold strictly as companion animals.
!!!!!Breeding is not permitted!!!!!
Breeding-quality ferrets are only placed with trusted, ethical, and experienced breeders whom I know personally or whose breeding programs I have carefully evaluated. My goal is to protect the health, temperament, and future of my bloodlines, and breeding rights are never granted casually.
I also do not place a male and female together in the same home. This policy helps prevent accidental breeding and ensures responsible ownership.
Likewise, I do not place two kits together with first-time ferret owners. While ferrets are highly social animals, raising two young kits at the same time requires confidence, experience, and an understanding of their individual development. Experienced owners may be considered for paired placements where appropriate.
A Lifelong Commitment
One of the things that means the most to me is hearing how my ferrets are doing after they leave my home.
When you welcome a ferret kit into your family, our relationship does not end on collection day. I genuinely enjoy receiving photographs, updates, and hearing about your ferret's adventures as they grow.
I will occasionally check in to see how your ferret is settling into its new home, and I will always be happy to answer questions or offer guidance whenever needed. Whether your ferret is six months old or six years old, you can always contact me.
I don't see myself as someone who simply sells animals. I am a breeder who invests my heart, time, and knowledge into every litter, and I care deeply about where each of my ferrets spends the rest of its life.
My greatest reward is knowing that every De Martel ferret kit is loved, well cared for, and living the happy, healthy life that every ferret deserves.
